Life had become overwhelmingly stressful, and everything carried a profound mental heaviness. Even the smallest, everyday challenges loomed large, feeling completely insurmountable. I found myself caught in a constant cycle of procrastination, unable to figure out why I couldn't just get things done. This mental burden manifested physically as well; I felt constantly sluggish and drained, as if an invisible weight was continuously holding me back.
The Change
I remembered how some of my friends had managed to completely transform their situations and mindsets after attending spiritual and yoga retreats. Hoping for a similar reset, I searched for retreats happening locally and eventually enrolled in a five-day detox program.
During our retreat, we participated in a strict five-day water fast. The initial two days were quite an adjustment; several of my retreat mates felt heavy-headed or developed headaches. Fortunately, anyone who found the process unbearable was given the option to have soy coffee.
"The challenges don't shrink — your capacity to carry them grows when you finally set the weight down."
Our daily routine was structured and deeply focused. We woke up at 5:00 AM, freshened up, and headed to the yoga room for various pranayama (breathing techniques) and yoga exercises. This was followed by meditation and visualization practices, which included powerful forgiveness exercises. Afterward, we kept our energy up by engaging in physical activities and sports like cricket and badminton.
From the third day onward, our regimen expanded to include deeper detoxification practices. We spent 15 minutes absorbing sunlight in minimal clothing, followed by mud baths and oil massages. We also practiced Jal Neti (nasal cleansing with saline water) and a saltwater flush to induce vomiting for internal cleansing. All of these intensive detox processes were conducted under the careful supervision of a trained therapist—I certainly would not attempt them without professional guidance.
By the fourth and fifth days, I noticed a profound increase in my mental acuity and focus. During one meditation session, we were instructed to visualize a shape on our palms. My mind felt so powerful that the visualization transcended a mere mental drawing; it genuinely felt as though a tangible, three-dimensional object was resting in my hand.
The days following the retreat brought a profound shift in my baseline state of being. I found myself feeling inexplicably good—a quiet, steady sense of joy that wasn't tied to any external event, achievement, or reason. It was just a deep contentment in the simple act of existing.
The lingering fatigue that I hadn't even fully realized I was carrying had completely evaporated. In its place, a vibrant agility took root. Physically, my body felt lighter - I lost 4 kgs and more responsive, moving with an ease and fluidity I hadn't felt in a long time. But the agility wasn't just physical; the mental fog had lifted entirely. My thoughts were sharp, clear, and unburdened, allowing me to process things with a newfound quickness.
Perhaps the most significant change was my shift in perspective. The everyday stressors and obstacles that would have previously loomed large and felt overwhelming suddenly appeared manageable, even trivial. The challenges themselves hadn't actually shrunk; rather, my capacity to handle them had vastly expanded. I had returned with a deep, renewed reservoir of energy, giving me the resilience and quiet confidence to face whatever came my way without losing my center.
To sustain these post-retreat benefits, I was advised to build a daily routine centered around de-stressing habits, starting with mindful eating. The core guideline was simple: avoid acidic, toxifying foods and actively include alkaline, detoxifying ones. Alongside this nutritional shift, I was encouraged to make meditation and visualization a non-negotiable daily practice.
If you are reading this, I highly recommend attending a residential retreat to hit the reset button on your own life. The specific organization you choose doesn't matter nearly as much as simply giving yourself the time and space to disconnect.
Ultimately, this experience taught me that life only feels impossibly challenging when we are weighed down by physical and mental stress. When we consistently maintain a routine of de-stressing, we move through the world with a profound sense of lightness, equipped to navigate our daily challenges with effortless resilience.
